In 2004 the International Franchise Association (IFA) published it’s first report “Franchising’s Impact on the Economy” the report was updated in 2005 and 2007.
In 2007 franchised businesses operated over 828,000 establishments in the United States, counting both establishments owned by franchisees and franchisors. These establishments represented 2.8 percent of all nonfarm business establishments in the United States. Franchised businesses directly provided more than 9.1 million jobs, met a $304 billion payroll, produced $802 billion of output, and added over $468 billion of gross domestic product (“GDP”). Franchised businesses accounted for 6.2 percent of all private non-farm jobs, 4.2 percent of all private non-farm payroll, 3.4 percent of all private non-farm output, and 3.9 percent of private non-farm GDP in 2007.
The economic impact of franchise operations in Maine is substantial. There are over 3500 franchised units in the State of Maine that directly employ over 38,000 Maine citizens with a payroll that exceeds $1 billion and a GDP approaching $4 billion.
